World Federation of the Deaf (WFD)
International Week of the Deaf is celebrated this week from 20 to 26 September 2010 throughout the world by individuals and national associations of the Deaf. This year, WFD has encouraged its national members to focus on Deaf Education, which continues to be one of the most contested issues in the history of Deaf people.
To support this cause, World Federation of the Deaf is calling individuals to sign an online petition, New Era Document, which rejects the resolutions of the 1880 Milan Congress that banned the use of sign language from educational programmes for deaf children. This is a call upon all nations and people of the world to remember history and ensure that educational programmes accept and respect all languages, including sign languages, and all forms of communication. The New Era Document was first presented and signed by hundreds of people in the 21st International Congress on the Education of the Deaf (ICED) in Vancouver, Canada in July 2010.

Joyful International Week celebrations to all!
WFD Invites Bids to Host 2013 International Conference
For WFD Ordinary, International and Associate Members only:
World Federation of the Deaf is inviting bids to host an International Conference in 2013. The organiser hosting the international conference shall submit a proposed theme, application and financial plan to the Board for approval. The host has all financial responsibilities for the conference arrangements.
If your organisation is interested to host a WFD conference in 2013, you are welcome to request any further information about the conference or to send the bid to WFD General Secretariat.
The deadline for sending the conference bids is 31 December 2010.

The World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) is an international non-governmental organisation representing approximately 70 million Deaf people worldwide. It is estimated that more than 80 percent of these 70 million live in developing countries, where authorities are rarely familiar with their needs or desires. Recognised by the United Nations (UN) as their spokes-organisation, WFD works closely with the UN and its various agencies in promoting the human rights of Deaf people in accordance with the principles and objectives of the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other general acts and recommendations of the UN and its specialised agencies. When necessary, WFD uses special, legal or administrative measures to ensure that Deaf people in every country have the right to preserve their own sign languages, organisations, and cultural and other activities. Most important among WFD priorities are Deaf people in developing countries; the right to sign language; and equal opportunity in all spheres of life, including access to education and information.
